I would like to join my colleagues at Tel Aviv University and elsewhere in expressing my sadness over the passing of Robert Lees, and my gratitude for his contribution to the field. I had the privelege of studying with Lees at Tel Aviv University in 1970-71, when he had just arrived to establish the Department there. It is largely through his influence that I entered theoretical linguistics. Those of us who had the good fortune to study with him will always recall with affection his wonderfully stimulating classes and his immense intellectual vitality.
