			INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
		 SPANISH LANGUAGE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES

The Computing Research Laboratory, with the cooperation of the Spanish
Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN), is organizing a
workshop on Spanish language processing technologies to be held in
Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Monday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 23, 1997,
immediately preceding the International Conference on Theoretical and
Methodological Issues in Machine Translation (TMIMT-97).

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers in
Spanish language processing from the Europe, North America and Spanish
America in order to share ideas on current research and technology
development, compile a list of resources for performing research and
development in the area and to establish a network of contacts in the
field. The size of the workshop will be limited to 60 participants
(20 from each region) and the structure of activities emphasizes broad
descriptions of research and development activities and infrastructure
accompanied by ample discussions. Also included are several social
events which will provide a more informal context for making personal
contacts.

The program consists of a single morning and single afternoon panel
session on each day. In addition, there will be organized lunches
each day as well as a reception after the first day's activities and a
banquet after the second.


Monday, July 22

9:00-12:15: Panel 1--Research Activities and Interests

Summary reports of the research activities and interests from a number
of academic, commercial and public R&D centers from each of the
regions. There will be a 15 minute break at 10:30.

12:15-2:30: LUNCH

2:30-5:45: Panel 2--Technologies and Applications

Summary reports on current or planned R&D efforts related to the
development of specific applications (Machine Translation, Information
Retrieval, Query Systems, Information Extraction, Distance Education
and Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Text Processing and Document
Handling). There will be a 15 minute break at 4:00.

6:30-8:00: RECEPTION


Tuesday, July 23

9:00-12:15: Panel 3--Research and Development Infrastructure

Summary reports on existing and planned infrastructure resources for
supporting Spanish language processing R&D (dictionaries, corpora,
lexicons, corpus analysis tools, language analysis and generation
software). There will be a 15 minute break at 10:30.

12:15-2:30: LUNCH

2:30-5:45: Panel 4--Future Directions

Position papers on the needs for Spanish language technologies, the
current state-of-the-art and the kinds of research (corpus
linguistics, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence and
language engineering) that will best support addressing those needs.
There will be a 15 minute break at 4:00.

8:00: BANQUET


We are requesting that those interested in participating submit a five
page (1200-1500 words) paper addressing one of the above panel topics
and a brief two page (500 words) biographical sketch. Each submission
will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee
each representing one of the regions. Submissions will be accepted in
Spanish or in English and the presentations are expected to be in
whatever language is selected for the submission. We expect to provide
interpreters at the workshop to facilitate cross language
communication during the presentations and discussions. In keeping
with the State of New Mexico, both Spanish and English will be
official languages for the workshop.

Location

The workshop will take place on the campus of St. John's College on
the outskirts of Santa Fe. There will be dormitory housing available
during the workshop and the TMIMT-97 for rather good rates for this
area (about $50/person/day, $70/person/day with 3 meals) or at a
couple of hotels in the center of town (about $80/person/day). There
will also be a registration fee to cover the costs of the workshop and
associated events (about $100/person). Because the cost of
participation may be rather high, especially for academics and small
business outside the US, we are actively seeking sponsors to help
defray these costs. However, for now please plan on paying the full
amounts described above.

			TALLER INTERNACIONAL SOBRE
		 EL PROCESAMIENTO COMPUTACIONAL DEL ESPAQOL

El Computing Research Laboratory (CRL), en colaboracisn con la
Sociedad Espaqola para el Procesamiento de Lenguaje Natural (SEPLN),
organiza un taller sobre el procesamiento computacional del espaqol
que tendra lugar en Santa Fe, Nuevo Mixico, el lunes 22 y martes 23 de
julio de 1997, previo a la Conferencia Internacional sobre Cuestiones
Tesricas y Metodolsgicas de la Traduccisn Automatica (TMIMT-97).

El objetivo de este taller es reunir a los principales investigadores
en el campo del procesamiento computacional del espaqol de las tres
regiones de Europa, Norteamirica e Hispanoamirica con el fin de
intercambiar informacisn sobre investigacisn y desarrollo de
tecnologmas punta, preparar una lista de recursos de apoyo a este tipo
de proyectos y establecer una red de contactos institucionales y
profesionales en el campo. El tamaqo del taller se limita a 60
participantes (20 de cada zona). El Comiti de organizacisn dara
prioridad a las descripciones que ofrezcan amplia informacisn de los
proyectos y de las infraestructuras de investigacisn y desarrollo
existentes. Despuis de las exposiciones se organizaran turnos de
debate para discutir y comentar las presentaciones. Tambiin se
realizaran actividades sociales que proporcionaran un contexto
informal para desarrollar los contactos personales.

El programa estara compuesto de una mesa redonda por la maqana y una
por la tarde, tanto el lunes como el martes. Ademas, se organizaran
comidas al mediodma, una recepcisn al finalizar el primer dma y un
banquete despuis del segundo dma.


Lunes 22 de julio

9:00-12:15: Mesa Redonda 1--Temas y actividades de investigacisn

Se presentaran informes resumidos de las actividades y de los temas de
interis de varios centros de investigacisn y desarrollo acadimicos,
institucionales y comerciales de cada una de las tres zonas. Habra un
descanso de 15 minutos a las 10:30.

12:15-14:30: COMIDA

14:30-17:45: Mesa Redonda 2--Tecnologmas y Aplicaciones

Se presentaran informes resumidos de los proyectos de investigacisn y
desarrollo de aplicaciones especmficas que se tienen planeadas o que
se desarrollan actualmente en temas como la traduccisn automatica, la
recuperacisn de informacisn, sistemas de consulta, extraccisn de
informacisn, enseqanza a distancia y sistemas inteligentes de
enseqanza, procesamiento de textos y gestisn de documentos. Habra un
descanso de 15 minutos a las 16:00.

18:30-20:00: RECEPCISN


Martes, 23 de julio

9:00-12:15: Mesa Redonda 3--Infraestructura para la investigacisn y
			 el desarrollo

Se presentaran los recursos existentes o planeados para apoyar la
investigacisn y desarrollo del procesamiento computacional del espaqol
(diccionarios, corpora, fondos lixicos, herramientas para el analisis
de corpora, programas para el analisis y la generacisn). Habra un
descanso de 15 minutos a las 10:30.

12:15-14:30: COMIDA

14:30-17:45: Mesa Redonda 4--Temas para desarrollar en el futuro

Ponencias de opinisn sobre las necesidades existentes para desarrollar
tecnologmas del procesamiento del espaqol, el estado del arte actual y
los tipos de investigacisn (ling|mstica de corpus, ling|mstica
computacional, inteligencia artificial, ingenierma del lenguaje) que
mejor ayuden a satisfacer esas necesidades. Habra un descanso de 15
minutos a las 16:00.

20:00: BANQUETE


Se solicita a los interesados en participar que envien un texto de
cinco paginas (1200-1500 palabras) sobre uno de los temas de las mesas
redondas y una breve nota biografica de dos paginas (500 palabras).
Las propuestas recibidas seran revisadas por tres miembros del comiti
de programa, uno por cada zona. Se aceptaran textos en espaqol o en
inglis, considerando que el idioma del texto sera el idioma en el que
se presentara la ponencia. Se espera que haya intirpretes durante el
taller para facilitar la comunicacisn entre las personas que asm lo
requieran durante las presentaciones y las tertulias.

Lugar

El taller tendra lugar en el campus de St. John's College localizado a
las afueras de Santa Fe. Habra alojamiento disponible en el mismo
campus durante el taller y TMIMT-97 a precios bastante bajos
(aproximadamente US $50/persona/dma, US $70/persona/dma con pensisn
completa) o en hoteles del centro urbano (aproximadamente US
$80/persona/dma). Tambiin habra una cuota de registro para cubrir los
costos del taller y las actividades asociadas (aproximadamente US
$100). Dado que el coste por participacisn es bastante alto,
especialmente para los acadimicos y pequeqas empresas que vienen de
afuera de los Estados Unidos, estamos buscando activamente
patrocinadores que ayuden a sufragar los gastos. Pero por el momento
las tarifas seran aprsximadamente las mencionadas.
