Theoretical Linguistics Programme, Budapest University 6th International Symposium on Logic and Language CALL FOR PAPERS Our Symposia on Logic and Language have aimed at promoting the interaction between formal linguists and logicians. They are organized every second year, once by the Department of Logic and Methodology of Science, once by the Theoretical Linguistics Programme of the Lorand Eotvos University of Budapest (which is a joint department of the University and Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences). In 1988, it is the Theoretical Linguistics Programme's turn. The conference will be held in Budapest, on August 29 to September 1, 1998. The topic of the 6th Symposium is ``Uses of Indefinite Expressions''. Papers are invited to contribute to the problem of how the various expressions traditionally considered indefinite are used. Deadlines. - -------- The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 15, 1998. Acceptance notifications will be sent out by May 1, 1988. Those who wish to participate must register with us before May 20, 1988. The camera-ready versions of the papers must be submitted by August 25, 1988; they will be photocopied and offered to the participants at the Symposium. Presentations. - ------------ Each presentation will be 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Attached is the final call-for-paper, with a new deadline, for a special issue of Information Processing & Management. The change is in response to a number of requests for such an extension. Those people who have submitted an article are welcome to submit a revised one if necessary. Sung-Hyun Myaeng ================================================================== Call for Articles (revised) Special Issue of Information Processing & Management on Information Retrieval with Asian Languages Interest is growing in effective and efficient retrieval of relevant information from large unstructured databases. Research in information retrieval (IR) has expanded its scope widely with advances in related areas such as natural language processing, machine learning, and human-computer interactions. Especially with the explosion of information in the World Wide Web, the need for information retrieval and related functions has become ubiquitos regardless of languages and cultures. This special issue of Information Processing & Management, an international journal with a strong emphasis on information retrieval, will be devoted to research and development in information retrieval with Asian languages. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: - retrieval or routing of texts at variouls levels of granularity - cross-language text retrieval - automated text categorization - infomation extraction and filtering - automatic text summarization (including automatic abstracting) - use of machine readable dictionaries and/or thesauri - language- or task-specific user interfaces for IR-related systems - various natural language processing techqniques for IR-related tasks Interested authors should submit five copies of their articles by January 31, 1998, to: Prof. Sung H.
