I was extremely saddened to hear of Lee Baker's passing. I had known
Lee since 1974, when I met him at the summer LSA Institute at Amherst,
Mass. I was a grad student at the time, and I thought of Lee as a
"name" in the field, someone whose work I had read, as had most
syntacticians working in generative grammar. I introduced myself to
Lee, and we became friends. I was always struck by how sane and
down-to-earth Lee was, a condition unfortunately not all that common
in academe. His work made a great impact on modern syntax over the
years, and those who had never met Lee have truly missed an
opportunity to meet a wonderful human being.----

I have known Carl Lee Baker first through his book (1978) then in person
at a conference in Wisconsin almost the same year. I was so impressed by
him not only as a linguist but also as a person that I moved as a doctoral
student from the university of Washington to Austin to work with him. I
never regretted the move. I was proud to be a student of his. He has been
very supportive all the time and I learned a great deal from him. He has
always been a man of principles. I am sure that not only the linguist
community but the world at large has lost a remarkable man. As a student
of his. I would like to extend my condolences to his family, friends and
colleagues

This is Suen Caesar Lun from the Dept. of Chinese, Translation
and Linguistics at City U. of Hong Kong. It is so sad to hear the
bad news of Dr. Baker. He taught me in an English course and I learned a
lot from him. It is definitely a loss to our department in Austin!
Please send my deepest condolences to his family. Thank you very much.
