Confs: Self-organizing maps

Editor for this issue: T. Daniel Seely <>

We'd appreciate your limiting conference announcements to 150 lines, so that we can post more than 1 per issue. Please consider omitting information useful only to attendees, such as information on housing, transportation, or rooms and times of sessions. Please do not use abbreviations or acronyms for your conference unless you explain them in your text. Many people outside your area of specialization will not recognize them. Thank you for your cooperation.

WSOM'97 is the first international meeting to be entirely dedicated
to the theory and applications of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM).
The SOM is a new powerful software tool for hard real-world
problems listed below. Highlights of the program:

 - TUTORIAL SHORT COURSE: prof. Teuvo Kohonen

 - PLENARIES: prof. Helge Ritter: Learning with the parameterized
 self-organizing map

prof. Karl Goser: Self-organizing map for
 intelligent process control

prof. Marie Cottrell: Theoretical aspects of
 the SOM algorithm

 - INVITED: prof. Risto Miikkulainen: SOM research in the USA

prof. Heizo Tokutaka: Condensed review of SOM and
 LVQ research in Japan

 - SESSIONS: Pattern recognition and Optimization
 signal processing

Monitoring and data mining Financial analysis

Temporal sequence processing Image analysis and vision

 Theory and extensions Probabilistic

 Text and document maps Hardware

 - PANEL: Document search

 - SOM CLINIC: Practical advice is given during the breaks

 - BANQUET: Dinner speech by Robert Hecht-Nielsen:
 A neural network saga

WSOM'97 is a unique occasion for anyone who

 - is looking for efficient means for analyzing and visualizing
 complex real-world data, or

 - wishes to gain new insight into the newest applications of the SOM.

General registration fee is FIM 1200 for the workshop and FIM 700
for the tutorial. Reduced registration fees are available for
students as well as for early registration before May 1.

WSOM'97 is a satellite workshop of the 10th Scandinavian Conference
on Image Analysis (SCIA) to be held on June 9 to 11 in Lappeenranta,
Finland, arranged by the Pattern Recognition Society of Finland.
Other co-operating societies are the European Neural Network Society
(ENNS), IEEE Finland Section, and the Finnish Artificial Intelligence
