 Teaching Linguistics to Non-Linguists:
How Can We Enrich"Introduction to Linguistics"
Courses?

As many of you may know, this summer's LSA
Institute will feature a series of NEH-Sponsored
workshops on the topic of teaching linguistics to
non-linguists.

As the organizer for week three of the series--"How
can we enrich "introduction to linguistics"
courses?"--I am in the process of collecting ideas
about innovative and engaging classroom activities,
homework assignments, lecture presentations, etc.

I invite all members of the list to contribute
whatever ideas and or materials they have found
particularly successful in introductory linguistics
classes. You may either (1) e-mail me at
daviduta.edu, (2) snail-mail me materials at the
address below, or (3) point me toward a relevant
web-page.

For the workshop, I will compile all the
contributions I receive (with a minimum of
editing/formatting) to create a resource packet for
those attending. Information will also be made
available to those interested via the WWW, _after_
the LSA Institute.* All contributors will be given
full credit for their contribution(s).

 6. Fachtagung der Sektion Computerlinguistik
 der
 Deutschen Gesellschaft fuer Sprachwissenschaft

Die 6. Fachtagung der Sektion Computerlinguistik der Deutschen
Gesellschaft fuer Sprachwissenschaft, die DGfS/CL 97, findet
vom 8.10. - 10.10. 97 im Wissenschaftlichen Zentrum der IBM
Deutschland Informationssysteme GmbH in Heidelberg statt.

Das Rahmenthema der DGfS/CL 97 ist "Anwendungen in der
Computerlinguistik". Erwuenscht sind Beitraege in deutscher
und englischer Sprache, die sich mit aktuellen Forschungs- und
Anwendungsfragen aus allen Gebieten der Computerlinguistik
auseinandersetzen, wobei in der Regel ein Bezug zum
Rahmenthema hergestellt werden sollte. Erweiterte Abstracts in
einem Umfang von maximal 6 Seiten muessen in drei Kopien bis
zum 31.5.1997 bei dem Organisator der DGfS/CL 97, Tibor Kiss,
eingereicht werden. Wenn moeglich sollten die Abstracts elek-
tronisch eingereicht werden als PostScript-Datei, Microsoft
Word 7.0 Binaerdatei oder RTF-Datei.
