The Faculty of Languages and European Studies of the University of the West of England (Bristol) is offering a research studentship from January 1999 onwards. Although the studentship is open for candidates from many different disciplines within the field of European Studies, readers of the linguist list may wish to draw the attention of potential candidates with interests in Linguistics to the position. The candidate's work will be associated with the research activities of the Linguistics Research Unit within the Centre for European Studies. Currently research within the Centre concentrates on Bilingualism and Language Contact, Sociolinguistics and (Bilingual) First Language Acquisition. The Faculty is rapidly expanding its provision in Linguistics, with the start of a new Linguistics Half Award in which students study Linguistics in combination with either Sociology or Psychology or Languages. Researchers from the Faculty of Languages and the Faculty of Social Sciences are jointly organising the Sociolinguistics Symposium in the year 2000. Candidates should have obtained a first or good second class honours degree in an area broadly within the Humanities, Social Sciences or Linguistics. Any additional relevant qualification and/or experience, in particular an initial postgraduate qualification, would be a distinct advantage. Familiarity with at least one foreign society and fluency in that society's language are crucial. You will be expected to take an active part in the Faculty's research workshops and seminars. The studentship is available for up to three years, depending on satisfactory outcomes of annual reviews. It carries an annual bursary of 6,000. This includes part-time fees for up to three hours teaching/week over a maximum of 24 weeks. In addition, enrolment and registration fees will be paid by the Faculty, bringing up the total value to around 8,750. Enquiries about the studentship should be made to the Director of Research, Professor Gisela Shaw, tel. 00-44-117-9763914, ext. 2385, email: Gisela.ShawMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueuwe.ac.uk.
