The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a postdoctoral staff position in the field of language comprehension. This is a non-permanent position, for which the maximum term of appointment is 5 years. The position will be available in 1999; we would prefer the successful candidate to begin earlier rather than later in the year. Young scientists with a completed Ph.D. in experimental psycholinguistics, another branch of human experimental psychology, or a related experimental discipline, are encouraged to apply. An important criterion is a demonstrated ability to publish research findings. Research at the institute in the area of language comprehension currently focusses on spoken-word recognition and the role of phonological structure in comprehension. The research includes strong components of cross-linguistic comparison and computational modelling. Current members of the group have primary research interests in phonetic perception, the processing of suprasegmental structure, the recognition of spoken words and the segmentation of continuous speech. The successful candidate should be working on the comprehension of spoken language, but we may give preference to a candidate whose expertise supplements that of current group members.
