Kpelle-English Dictionary with English-Kpelle Glossary Elizabeth Grace Winkler (Indiana University - Bloomington) This dictionary of Kpelle as spoken in Bong County, Liberia was prepared with the assistance of Clara Jimmy-Samba, a native speaker of the language. Kpelle is part of the Mande branch of the Western Sudanic subgroup of the Niger Congo family and is representative of Mande languages in many ways, including the absence of noun class markers and the presence of five tonal melodies. As Kplelle is not a written language, dictionary entries (over 1,100) are given in phonetic transcription. Also included are comments on the sound system and grammar of Kpelle.
