There is a large literature in Japanese on Japanese L1 acquisition. Keiko Nakamura has summarized much of it in her recent dissertation: "The acquisition of communicative competence by Japanese children: The development of sociolinguistic awareness" (University of California, Berkeley, 1997). She is now doing further research in Japan, with Yukio Otsu, who has done major research on Japanese acquisition in a GB framework.
