ANNOUNCEMENT ARC RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - LEVEL B Linguistic typology of Sinitic languages A suitably qualified person in the area of syntactic, semantic and discourse analysis of Sinitic languages is sought for the position of ARC Research Associate to work in collaboration with Dr H.M. Chappell on the research project "A semantic typology of complex syntactic constructions in Sinitic languages" (ARC multi-year grant 1997-1999). The position is based at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Key research tasks To carry out joint work on the collection, transcription and linguistic analysis of data from one of the less studied Sinitic languages such as Gan, Hakka, Wu (apart from Shanghainese) or North(east)ern Min dialects such as Fuzhouese. The goal is to set up a typology of Sinitic languages based upon the grammatical constructions and categories investigated. This project currently employs a team of seven research assistants on a part-time basis for research into Cantonese (Yue), Taiwanese (Southern Min), Shanghainese (Wu), Xiang and Mandarin. Compilation of a computerized database of materials is a second important ongoing goal of the project. Selection criteria Applicants must have a PhD degree in Chinese Linguistics and fluency in English and Mandarin. Research experience in Sinitic languages such as Hakka, Gan, Wu or Min is desirable. Appointment details The position is fixed term for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further one or two years. Salary range from A$46,270 to A$54,947 with reimbursement of a round trip airfare. Commencement date is previewed for mid-1998. Closing date for applications is 24 April 1998. MRM, a foreign language research firm in the Washington, D.C. area, has been doing research work on North African Arabic dialects and is now beginning to work on Arabic dialects spoken in areas east of Egypt. Accordingly MRM is seeking to employ an Arabic dialectician to produce language learning materials in the dialects spoken east of Egypt.
