1. LINGUIST Network, Fund Drive Update

Dear Linguist Subscribers,

We'd like to update you on the progress of our annual fund drive. As
you've do doubt noticed, the Gratuitious Piggybank is still in place
on the home page. The reason is that the fund drive is not doing
great. In other words, we still need your help.

Here are the particulars. We very much appreciate the generous
contributions we've received so far: $4,040 from publishers
(this should amount to $4,540 when all expected payments are received), 
and $4,640 more from subscribers and other supporters.

However, we still need about $6,000 more. We need $12,000 to fund
2 fellowships for editors. And we had hoped to establish a half-time
fellowship for a computer sciences student, because we badly need 
someone to perform some programming tasks. These will include 
improvement to the Dissertation Abstracts page, the Programs Directory
and the Personal Directory (features of LINGUIST that are near to the
hearts of many subscribers). Also, we want to be able to keep Brett,
one of our experienced editors, on for next year. And, even though
LINGUIST will open an editing site at Wayne State University, Marty
will still be at Texas A&M and we want to be able to continue to fund
his fellowship. Elaine is going to Poland next year and Anita and
Julie are graduating. So it is crucial that we keep Brett and Marty.
Otherwise we will not be able to keep up with our regular workflow in '98-99.

And, if you are an author, remember that you can help by urging your
editor to announce books and journal issues on LINGUIST. Most of our
supporting publishers have come to us because their authors told them
that LINGUIST is a good way to advertise linguistics books to a large,
focused audience (10,000 subscribers in 85 different countries).

Many, many thanks to those of you who have already made contributions. The
names of our 1998 contributors are listed at the end of this message.
