"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. The University of Southampton, one of the UK's leading research-intensive universities and a member of the Russell Group, invites applications for the position of Senior Lecturer/Reader in English Language Education /TESOL from candidates with an excellent national and international track record of teaching, research and publication.

We are particularly interested in individuals with established research/ teaching expertise in one or more of: language pedagogy, online education/ technology in language teaching, language teacher education, curriculum design, English for specific purposes, or other areas related to English Language teaching, to complement and strengthen the existing teaching and research expertise of staff in Modern Languages/Linguistics in the Faculty of Humanities. An interest in Global Englishes/ English as a Lingua Franca is also desirable. The successful candidate will have an established reputation for research, evidenced through a strong publications record and proven ability to attract research funding. He/she will be expected to develop a programme of research and impact activities of the highest quality, suitable for submission to future national evaluations of research excellence.

The post is intended to provide leadership for our provision in English language education/TESOL. The appointee will have substantial experience of teaching and supervision at postgraduate level. He/she will supervise research students in ELT/TESOL, teach research-led postgraduate and undergraduate modules in English language education, and contribute to team-taught modules, including online modules. He/she will also contribute to the efficient management and administration of Modern Languages and the Faculty of Humanities, and to the development of the Faculty internationalisation strategy, through collaboration with the university’s international HE partners.
