"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Job Description: The applied linguistics faculty in the English Department at Northern Arizona
University invites applications for two (2) tenure-track positions at the rank of
assistant professor beginning in August 2013. We seek two colleagues with
primary teaching and research specializations in one or more of the following
- L2 reading with an emphasis on applied psycholinguistics or vocabulary
- L2 writing with an emphasis on text analysis or writing development
- L2 skill-based assessment, using statistical methods
- L2 pragmatics with an emphasis on listening and speaking

Responsibilities include teaching courses in the MA-TESL program, the applied
linguistics doctoral program, and the English undergraduate program. Teaching
responsibilities include teaching up to 9 hours per semester, with reassigned
time based on dissertation committee work and College policies.
Responsibilities also include active research; student advising and mentoring;
doctoral committee work; and department, college, university, and professional
