Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral position in applied linguistics through the Department of English at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. This project will focus on extracting intonation features applicable to automated scoring systems and will develop a program to measure the degree of nativeness of accented speech. The project’s goal is to develop a new program that will interface with existing, fluency-based speech recognition programs and possibly lead to a patent application. This new position has guaranteed funding for two calendar years commencing on the date of appointment, with the intention of securing continued funding through an NSF grant. Minimum Education: Ph.D. in Natural Language Processing, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Computational Linguistics by the time of appointment, with an emphasis on speech technology. Required Qualifications: - Background in NLP and signal processing - Background in machine learning (e.g., HMM, GMM, SVM) - Interest or experience in speech feature extraction/analysis (e.g., pitch, LPC, MFCC, formants, jitter & shimmer) - Computer program skills (e.g., C/C++, MATLAB, python) - Knowledge about speech processing and implementation in automated systems - Expertise in the application of speech recognition systems and fluency Preferred Qualifications: - Knowledge of linguistics - Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research - A record of software deliverables and publication - Knowledge of copyright and patent procedure - Background in statistics To Apply: Candidates should email letter of application, CV, and names & contact information for 3 references to Dr. Okim Kang at the contact email address below before November 15, 2012.
