"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Job Description: The Department of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in Phonetics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will begin on July 1, 2013 at the earliest. The successful candidate is expected to have the Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.

Applicants should present a proven record of research and evidence of excellence in teaching. Duties will include directing the phonetics laboratory. The department particularly encourages applications from scholars who can contribute to Penn's tradition of cooperation across subdisciplines within linguistics and can participate actively in interdisciplinary research in cognitive science. Special areas of interest include sociophonetics, the formal interface of phonetics with other subfields, and the application of computational techniques to large corpora of phonetic data.
