A Postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Fiona Bailey Ph.D., within the Physiology Department at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. The successful candidate will work on NIDCD-NIH funded research projects that investigate the neuromuscular control of tongue in speech production. The research involves the study of skilled tongue motion as a human motor output entailing precise neural control to achieve a desired acoustic output/target. Using tungsten microelectrodes and whole muscle fine wire electromyography, the candidate will identify and characterize single motor unit and whole muscle EMG activities as a function of volitional (motor cortex) and respiratory (brainstem) driven behaviors. The candidate will also be responsible for developing appropriate speech and quasi-speech stimuli and for conducting acoustic measures and associated analysis. The candidate will possess a doctoral degree in linguistics, speech and hearing sciences, biomedical or engineering related field and demonstrate excellence in written and spoken English (the latter skills will be assessed at interview). A background in digital signal processing and computational skills is highly desirable. Understanding of motor systems physiology and/or electrophysiology, and experience with human subjects would be advantageous. The candidate should be able to work independently, be highly motivated, and conduct the project with minimal supervision and with attention to detail. The candidate is expected to: 1) participate in planning, designing, and conducting research under the direction of the PI; 2) analyze research data and provide interpretations; 3) contribute to the development of research documentation for publication.
