Dear On-line Conference Subscriber,
With this message we would like to officially open
the LINGUIST ON-LINE CONFERENCE "Geometric and
Thematic Structure in Binding."
The conference will take place over a three week
period, from Oct 14 to Nov 4.
There are three conference sessions, one for each
week of the meeting. During each session, three
papers will be presented and discussed.
The sessions will work in the following way:
1. Papers will be "presented" at the beginning
of the week; this means that an ASCII version
of papers will be sent via email to conference
subscribers and that the html versions of
papers will be made available on the Conference
Web Site.
Note: We recommend that papers be read
on the Web Site if possible, and that a
late model browser be used. Visual presentation
on the Web is far superior to email (with
character encoding and trees, for example) and
subscribers can take advantage of the fact
that the papers are hyper-texted (on an
experimental basis, for example, we have linked key
technical terms to a glossary; and there
are other useful links, such as to authors' homepages,
as well).
THE CONFERENCE HOMEPAGE IS AT:
http://www.emich.edu/~linguist/linconf/
(Note: There is also a back-up homepage at:
http://engserve.tamu.edu/files/linguistics/linguist/linconf/)
2. We predict that there will be a lag-time of a
few days while the papers are being read by subscribers.
We refer to this the "reading period." However,
we will post comments/discussion should it occur
during this time.
3. Toward the middle and end of the week, we anticipate
that discussion of papers will intensify. The procedure
for discussion of papers is straightforward:
Send your comments via email to:
And please be sure to indicate which paper
is under consideration.
The comments will go through a central processing point
at LINGUIST. This will allow us to group comments into
coherent units where possible (and to avoid discussion
that gets completely off track). The comments will
then be sent via email to all subscribers and made
available on the Discussion Web Site at:
http://emunix.emich.edu/~linconf/
Note: Again, we recommend that you avail
yourself of the Web Site if possible.
(The back-up Web Site is:
http://www.emich.edu/~linguist/linconf/mail/)
4. Each session will have a moderator whose task is
to keep the discussion moving and to give a final
statement about the session (summaries, observations,
etc.).
The first session, moderated by Prof. Robert May of the
University of California, Irvine, consists of these papers:
George Aaron Broadwell, State University of New York at Albany,
"Switch-reference phenomena as evidence for structure-based
approaches to binding theory"
Larisa Zlatic, University of Texas at Austin,
"Syntactico-Semantic Approach to Binding: Evidence from Serbian"
Martin Everaert, Utrecht University; and Elena Anagnostopoulou, Tilburg
University, "Thematic Hierarchies and Binding Theory:
Evidence from Greek"
Expect these in your mail over the next 24 hours, or see
the Conference Web Page: http://www.emich.edu/~linguist/linconf/
Thank you, and we look forward to an active meeting.
