I was wondering about the status of example (2b). I agree with the
judgment cited, but it also seems to me that (i) is of the same status:
(i) ??John concerns Mary/The men concern the women
(cf. "John is concerned about Mary"/"The boys are concerned about each
other".) If (2b) and (i) are comparable, then there is no argument from
the former about anaphoric binding, and the case from (1) - (3) for a
role of theta-prominence in English is weakened, turning now only on a
particular analysis of (1) (which could be argued to be structural).
