General Mailing List Help
What is 'hosting'?
Hosting means that your list will 'live' on our Listserv mailing list server. The mailing list address will be a (listname)@listserv.linguistlist.org address; the subscriber list will be stored on our list server; our list server will send out issues; and if you want to modify how your list works, you do it through our web site. Additionally, all postings will be archived and searchable on our site, and we provide web forms for users to manage their subscriptions. Though we host the list, the list owners retain full control of it. Typically, you will request hosting if you have an idea for a new mailing list and need software and support to manage it. However, we will happily take over hosting of an existing list if you wish to move it from a commercial host, for example. Please note that moving a list in this way involves changing the list addresses that your subscribers are accustomed to. We will do our best to convert any old archives you have to Listserv format. We only host lists that are related to linguistics or have substantial linguistic content. Only potential list owners should choose the 'hosting' option. Go to the Hosting Request page.
What is 'mirroring'?
Mirroring means that we set up a special address on our Listserv mailing list server which you subscribe to your list. In such a way, we collect your list postings and make them available and searchable from our web site. We also provide web forms for users to manage their subscriptions, if they wish. You do not change the way you manage your list; you keep the same host and send messages to the same addresses. We only mirror lists that are related to linguistics or have substantial linguistic content. Only list owners should choose the 'mirroring' option. Go to the Mirroring Request page.
What is 'submitting a link/address'?
When you submit a link, you just tell the linguistics community about a useful mailing list. No archives are stored on the LINGUIST List web site. Submit a link/address. If you are a list owner, we strongly encourage you to request mirroring instead.
Advantages of archiving on LINGUIST List
Our hosting/mirroring service is absolutely free of charge, and free of advertisements. We do not impose a strict storage capacity. When you archive on LINGUIST List, you can be sure that your messages are safe; we do not delete idle lists. Plus, we provide web forms for subscription management. Your list will also be accessible by our Multi List search engine, where our 100+ lists can be searched at once. The Mailing List Archive service is supported by NSF grant SBR-9975299, and by donations from our users.
