LINGUIST List Intern, Summer 2008

A Southern California native, I currently attend the University of California at Santa Cruz as a Linguistics major and Classical Studies minor, Class of 2009. My "discovery" of the field happened in my senior year of high school when I found an old introductory Linguistics textbook lurking amongst my Politics teacher's abundant collection of publications on postbellum American economics. I became interested quickly, as I had recently read The Story of English by McCrum et al., and ended up reading the entire textbook and subsequently writing my senior paper (a graduation requirement for some California high schools) on The Great Vowel Shift. My obsession has only grown since, and I plan on applying to grad school for Linguistics or Indo-European Studies in the Fall.

My main areas of interest within the field are Syntax and Semantics, though I also have a nascent interest in Typology and Philology. This summer I will be working on LINGUIST List's Multi-Tree Project.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading Linguistics publications and literature of the Lost Generation, Beat, Hippie, and Magical Realism persuasions, hiking, riding my bike, surfing (when there is an ocean around), listening to music, and playing guitar. I am also an avid coffee drinker and can often be found haunting local coffee shops with book or notepad in hand.
