"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Notice: Can anyone offer crash space within easy public transport distance from CUNY for a speaker at the ILA conference on The Emergence of Language in the Child and in the Species on March 30 and April 1? For what may be my only ever trip to the USA, I would hope to be able to stay for a day or so longer. In return, I can offer something similar within easy reach of central London.
