"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Notice: House is in Chevy Chase DC near Nebraska Avenue, very accessible by bus to Tenley Town and Friendship Heights Red Line Metros. 10 minutes to American U. Buses are within one short block, and Connecticut Avenue stores/services within one mile. Available at the end of May. Costs are reduced for one or two persons in exchange for some house sitting duties for the owner. This is an 83-year-old furnished four bedroom family home in a well-established, unpretentious neighborhood with all amenities, including linens, dishes, etc. and a yard. The owner will be overseas - but accessible - with Fulbright. Mature, responsible scholar/researcher/older grad student.
