Notice: We are starting a doctorate programme on applied language studies. I am supposed to teach a new subject called Linguistic Theories. It seems there are not many new and updated textbooks available for post-graduate students. I would like to know if you have any recommendations. The books I read twenty years ago were Geoffrey Sampson's School of Linguistics, Fritz Newmeyer's Linguistic Theories of America, Fred D'Agostino's Chomsky's Systems of Ideas, and Randy Harris' The Linguistics Wars.
