"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Notice: I will be visiting Zambia, and possibly Zimbabwe soon, and would like to meet scholars or interested parties there who could discuss language policy, endangered languages and the general language layout of these countries. I'll be there during the month of February and would love to treat you to lunch, dinner, breakfast -- whatever you'd like, and just listen to you talk. I am interested in rating the power of certain policies to influence the behavior of small language communities. Thanks.
