"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Notice: As an English Language Honours student at Glasgow University I'm writing a dissertation on terms of address in the Thai language. However I have only been able to find a few Thai speakers to interview. I would appreciate any Thai speaking contacts that you would have. The focus of my research is on those who speak Thai and English. It would involve answering a fairly short questionnaire specifically on terms of address which I would happily email.
