As the world's largest online linguistics resource, The LINGUIST List is dedicated to disseminating information on languages and language analysis, and to providing the discipline of linguistics with the infrastructure necessary to function in the digital world. Our aim is to provide a forum where academic linguists can discuss linguistic issues and exchange linguistic information. Begun in late 1990 as a mailing list, LINGUIST now also maintains a 2000+ page website with web versions of our daily posted items, plus a collection of a wide variety of resources. Today, the mailing list has more than 25,000 worldwide subscribers; the website receives approximately 3,000 hits per day.

Thanks to user contributions and the aid of the publishing community, LINGUIST continues to be a free resource which is run by linguistics professors and graduate students, who work as editors and research assistants, earning support for themselves as they work through their degree programs.
