Phraseology includes the whole area of more or less "fixed" combinations of
words on up to formulaic sentences and texts. While systematic research on
phraseology goes back to the beginning of the 20th century, broad-based
international research only began to develop in the 70's, but all the more
rapidly since. The Handbook offers a systematic outline and overview of the
available results of this research.
Alongside structural linguistic topics, the Handbook treats stylistic,
pragmatic, semiotic, sociolinguistic, areal and historical linguistic
aspects of phraseology, as well as issues of phraseology related to
specific types of texts and talk, technical and literary language. It
emphasizes specific characteristics of phraseology in various Indo-European
and non-Indo-European languages along with contrastive linguistic,
translation theoretical and lexicographic issues. Finally, the Handbook
pays special attention to new developments in phraseology such as: the
cognitive basis of phraseology, psycholinguistic problems, language
acquisition and language teaching, and interculturality, as well as
computer linguistic and corpus linguistic aspects of phraseology.
