Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Title: Tones and Tunes
Subtitle: Volume 1: Typological Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody
Edited By: Tomas Riad
Carlos Gussenhoven
URL: http://www.degruyter.de/cont/fb/sp/detail.cfm?id=IS-9783110190571-1
Series Title: Phonology and Phonetics 12.1
Description:

Despite the recent advances in the integration of lexical tone and
intonation in phonological theory, all too often the study of intonation
and the study of lexical tone are viewed as belonging to different research
traditions.

Volume 1 strengthens the integrated approach by studying tone and
intonation within a common framework, and by tracing their interaction in
specific prosodic systems. Some papers deal with the structural properties
of lexical tone and intonation, while others focus on the historical
development of prosodic systems. This volume also includes a re-evaluation
of a classic paper on the typology of tone rules, and a survey of features
signalling question intonation in African languages.
