Bilingual teaching and learning has become a major trend throughout multilingual Europe both at primary and secondary school level. This book provides an overview of research results, current approaches, issues, and practices in the field of bilingual education at primary school level. The book seeks to inform in-service teachers, teacher trainees and university students about the goals, chances, and difficulties involved in the integration of different bilingual teaching and learning programmes such as CLIL, immersion, or bilingual modules. It focuses on questions such as:
• What is the benefit of bilingual education?
• Can bilingual education enhance both language and content learning or does it water down one of these areas?
• Which approach(es) to bilingual education are most promising in primary school settings?
• How can bilingual content classes and subject matter be evaluated and assessed?
Each chapter includes a brief summary, pre- and post-reading activities and further reading suggestions. The book is thus especially suitable for university seminars and further teacher training as well as for final exam preparation.
