Series Title: De Gruyter Pluralisierung & Autorität 37
Description:

This volume examines the symbolic systems that governed America’s integration into the European weltanschauung. These symbolic systems included Amerindian myths and religious beliefs along with the concepts of Christian belief, introduced and taught by the Europeans. As the indigenous American populations progressively assimilated, the colonialist enterprise was described and justified in historical treatises. This study presents a detailed examination of political, legal, theological, and historiographic problems associated with this process.
