Abstract:

In this work, which is characterised by a methodological approach oriented towards the application, we have presented the findings of a study and of development activities, which resulted in the implementation of an Italian-French, machine translation system.

In the first of the three parts, which compose this work, we have described the main components, features and current status of a typical Systran machine translation system. We have, then, documented the various steps, the process and the activities, which have brought us to create a basic Italian-French lexicon and the necessary transfer modules to set up an operational Italian-French machine translation system.

In the middle part, we have described, with a great number of examples, the linguistic development and problem-solving activities that have gradually led us to improve the translation quality and to stabilise the system as a whole.

In the third part, we have evaluated our work and cast a critical look at this specific language pair, as well as at the Systran system in general. As a conclusion, we have put forward some proposals and suggestions to widen the semantic coverage of the Systran lexicon and to improve the handling of idiomatic expressions.
