Recently there has been a growing interest in the morphosyntactic structure of Reflexives represented in the grammars of different languages. In this sense, the present study attempts to describe the morphosyntactic features of reflexive constructions employed in Turkish. It is a well-known fact that Turkish employs both the nominal and the verbal strategies in marking reflexivity. Kendi and kendisi anaphors used in marking nominal reflexivity and the reflexive markers {-(I)n} / {-(I)l} used in encoding verbal reflexivity exhibit quite different properties when compared with the reflexive markers used in other languages. Therefore it seems difficult to explain the linguistic phenomenon of reflexivity in Turkish by focusing merely on a single component of grammar. In this respect, the present study, drawing upon the Distributed Morphology to theorize the interplay of semantic, syntactic and morphological components of grammar, aims to investigate the distributive and behavioral characteristics of reflexive
constructions in Turkish.
In order to achieve this purpose, this study raises two fundamental questions:
1. What kind of internal structure do the reflexive anaphors in Turkish represent?
2. Is it possible to treat the nominal and the verbal reflexivity employing a holistic approach?
With reference to the findings obtained from analysis of our corpus, it seems possible to indicate that reflexive anaphors in Turkish, similar to the ones in other languages, are derivatives of intensifier+reflexive constructions. Additionally, within the theoretical framework of Distributed Morphology this study achieved to develop a holistic reflexivity model which encompasses both the nominal and the verbal reflexivity strategies used in Turkish.
