The aim of this study is to describe and analyse the design and
implementation of a syllabus and its lesson content in an ESL for
socialisation course.
The study poses the following questions:
• What elements must be considered when designed an ESL syllabus?
• How does one design appropriate content for use in the ESL classroom?
• What factors influence or shape the content and design of course material?
• What specific language forms are embedded in the social practices taught?
In this study I consider the design of each element of a syllabus and its
components from the perspective of a beginning teacher, with the purpose of
answering the questions posed. Given the framework of a specific ESL
course, this study looks at the challenges faced in planning and creating
authentic texts as lesson material.
This study focuses on the socialisation of learners into a new community of
practice. The planning and implementation of lesson material reflects the
social practices of the community in which learners are expected to
participate. The study proposes ways in which the creation of socialisation
syllabi may be approached for successful language learning.
