Abstract:

The thesis 'The Phonology of Neath English: A Socio-dialectological survey'
is a socio-dialectological study of the English spoken in Neath, South
Wales. The thesis describes the accent of Neath, analyses to what extent
non-linguistic variables affect the accent, and gives an overview of the NE
intonation system.
In a direct interview with indirect questioning, 27 informants were
interviewed to collect data for a phonetic and phonological investigation.
Five people were recorded in a second round of interviews conducted to
obtain data in digital form for the intonation analysis. The informants are
categorised into three age-groups, into male and female, and into graduates
and non-graduates.
In addition to the phonetic and phonological description of the NE accent,
this thesis analyses linguistic variables in connection with social
variables and shows the extent of the influence non-linguistic variables
have on people's accents in Neath. Social variables, such as gender, age,
and education, are connected to phonetics and phonology.
Neath English is a typical Southern Welsh English accent with only minor
differences from its neighbouring accents. In the analysis of
non-linguistic factors, it turns out that the factor age influences the
choice of variables the most. The factors education and male/female also
affect the choice of variants to different extents.
The intonation analysis shows that Neath English uses nuclear tones, heads,
and tails as well as grammatical, attitudinal, and discourse functions of
intonation in a different way from RP.
