The human language faculty, which is an intrinsic part of human nature, and which evolved from other (human or animal, gestural or vocal) communication systems, can be described from various perspectives: (i) from a linguistic viewpoint, (ii) from a psychological viewpoint, and (iii) from a neurobiological viewpoint.
Starting with a single aspect of the linguistic (phonological) description of language, namely the category syllable and the feature sonority, this study develops, by integrating linguistic, psychological and biological knowledge about speech perception, the hypothesis that the syllable structure resp. the sonority contour of an utterance is processed by the right hemisphere of the brain, which is empirically tested with the method of dichotic listening
