Discussion on nominal ellipsis grounded on prescriptive grammars, on generative theory and on Halliday4s systemic-functional approach, in order to propose elements to define such a linguistic phenomenon. Definition of nominal ellipsis grounded on Halliday4s approach whose main results are: a) ellipsis must be described as Ellipsis-construction (E-c, the whole of the system) and Ellipsis-element (e-c, one of the main parts of the system). The construction implies an interrelation between E-element and the Referent (R) which is presuppositional. b) The whole system is composed by the following main subsystems: Search Instructors of the Referent Nucleus, Nucleus of the Exophoric Referent, Nucleus of the Endophoric Referent, Anchorage of the Nucleus of Ellipsis-e, Maintainer Zero of the Referent, Search Non-Zero Instructors of the Nucleus of Ellipsis-e, Search Zero Instructors of the Nucleus of Ellipsis-e, Ellipsis-element. c) Ellipsis is a phenomenon of reduction of the statement, however it is not empty; d) Ellipsis is realized by a zero lexical category; e) Ellipsis maintains R in the cases of endophoric constructions and presents R in the cases of exophoric ones. These properties are elicited from a theoretical basis made up of seven basic notions, namely: a) the tension between the system and the use; b) the options coded in the system which are mapped onto the structures; c) the phenomenon of reduction; d) the core in semantics which is realized in lexicogrammar; e) the text formed by sentences, which is constructed according to a given context of situation; f) the phenomenon of recuperability; g) the category of noun.
