Abstract:

Recent studies (Galvão 2002, Dall'Aglio-Hattnher et alii,2001) suggest the emergency of a evidential system markers in Brazilian Portuguese, via grammaticalization. I characterize the use of acho (que) and parece (que) when these forms have the same semantic-discoursive funcion - doubt markers - in the Florianopolis's speek. The analysis of phenomenon is in two steps: grammaticalization (verb + complement clause to opinion marker and perpecption marker to doubt markers) and the variation of acho (que) and parece (que) when these are doubt markers. The purpose of Grammaticalization Theory, and the Variation and Change Theory suported the analysis. Since the interchange of forms is possible, acho (que) and parece (que) are used in specific semantic-discoursive contexts. The results suggest that the forms are specializing in doubt markers, and the general hipothesys of a evidential system markers in Brazilian Portuguese is corrobored.
