Abstract:

A subset of natural language discourse, viz. aviation communication, is subjected to a theoretically and empirically grounded analysis. Particular sections of the discourse show a deviation from the strict regulations which have been installed for this type of communication. Those parts that conform with the regulations belong to a controlled language. By contrast, the parts breaking the rules violate the grammar of the controlled language. This analysis attempts to formalise the patterns which emerge whenever the regulations are transgressed.
