Abstract:

This dissertation deals with various aspects of the syntax of arguments in the Germanic languages. Its main claims are: (a) The EPP and the theory of abstract Case can be eliminated from the grammar and their effects can be derived from other components of the grammar; (b) Several types of crosslinguistic variation in the syntax of arguments can be related to syntactic parameters whose values reflect orphological properties.
