Abstract:

Russian purpose infinitives comprise bare infinitives as well as expressions with overt material preceding the infinitive:

(1)
a. My prisli vyzec' v mozgu plesen' proslogo.
b. Oni tvorili, ctoby soxranit' sebja.
c. My nacali peregovory o prekrascenii jadernyx vzryvov s tem, ctoby v itoge vyrabotat' soglasenie o polnom, okoncatel'nom ix zaprescenii.

These constructions are investigated in the framework of the Principles-and-Parameters approach, making crucial use of the assumptions put forward in Barriers (Chomsky 1986). The usual levels of representation are complemented by Semantic Form (SF) mediating between Logical Form and Conceptual Structure (CS), i.e., between linguistic and conceptual knowledge (cf. Bierwisch 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988). Chapter 1, Diachronic aspects of Russian non-finite purpose constructions, presents Old Church Slavonic and Old Russian constructions that are interesting even for an analysis of present-day Russian - the supine, the bare infinitive, the infinitival subordinate clause and PPs consisting of an overt preposition and its infinitival complement. Chapter 2, Embedded purpose infinitives in Modern Russian, discusses the characteristic features related to the notion of purpose. Two classes of purpose infinitives are suggested: rationale infinitives vs. objective infinitives. Included in this bifurcation are the traditional subjective and objective (bare) infinitives as well as expressions containing overt material preceding the infinitive:

Rationale infinitives
Oni poexali v gorod {x / ctoby / dlja togo, ctoby} zapastis' produktami.
Hto derevo my rubili, ctoby nam vzjat' proby.

Objective infinitives
Bog nadelil menja kryl'jami {x / ctoby / dlja togo, ctoby} podnimat'sja v nebo.
Pomoscnik sostavil spisok, ctoby direktoru byt' v kurse dela.
