Burunge is a Southern Cushitic language, spoken in the Dodoma district, Tanzania, by approximately 20.000 people, a minority language under pressure from Swahili (national and official language) and Rangi (another locally dominant Bantu language). Except for wordlists (Meinhof 1906, Swynnerton 1946, Whiteley 1958), nothing has been published on Burunge yet.
The main objective of the present study is neither historical reconstruction nor the theoretical application of a certain model of grammar, but the adequate description of the Burunge language as it is spoken today. Where comparison seems to be useful, parallels are drawn to Iraqw, a closely related and fairly well documented language.
