Foregrounded Elements in Carl Sandburg's Major Poem: A Linguistic Study of Poetic Style and Technique
This dissertation tackles the major poems of the modern American poet Carl Sandburg (died in 1967). It includes a linguistic analysis on three levels i.e. the syntactic, the lexico-semantic and the typo-phonologica. It starts with a theoretical chapter surveying the different linguistic schools which tackle stylistic analysis of literary works.
The chapters related to applied stylistic analysis focus on frequently used syntactic, semantic and typographical features in Sandburg's major poems. It was found out that Sandburg is an innovative poet who employs a certain linguistic feature to serve his poetic and thematic ends effectively. At the end of the dissertation, there are statistical tables determining the percentage of occurrence of any linguistic feature.u
