From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

Abstract: The dissertation is as much a reflection of the work done at the Pacific
Language Institute (1992-2006) as it is a current table of research to the work
that was done during the years 1992 to 2006 [1 & 2]. Four research papers
are examined and reseached against current literature on each subject. The
four papers come from the archives of the Pacific Language Institute and are
listed as follows:

1. Metrical Phonology: German Sound System
2. Physical Linguistics
3. Metrical Phonology and SLA
4. The language Learing Loop: A Pronunciation System

These papers have been either presented at conferences or have been
published in peer-reviewed journals. Both of the metrical phonology papers
and the physical linguistics paper can be found at the ERIC Clearinghouse on
Language and Linguistics. The Language Learning Loop paper was published
in 'TESOL Matters' in 1997.
