Disciplinary Literacies

This special issue of ESP Today concerns the teaching of disciplinary literacies in tertiary ESP settings. ESP involves research and practice in the teaching and learning of English to prepare learners for competent performance in various workplace and academic situations (Dudley-Evans & St John, 1998).

Disciplinary literacy is a key part of such learning given that it addresses discipline-specific speaking, listening to, reading, writing, and viewing of verbal, non-verbal, and multimodal texts. It equips learners with the tools for both functioning in various target performance situations and reflecting on their performance and themselves in relation to the target performance situations of various kinds. Through developing disciplinary literacies, learners are equipped with the tools and resources for producing and receiving texts in their disciplines and constructing a professional identity.

The special issue of ESP Today is intended to stimulate dialogue between discipline experts, subject specialists, ESP practitioners, and literacy educators by highlighting the complementarity between them in identifying and teaching disciplinary literacies.

The special issue of ESP Today welcomes contributions on the following topics:

- Theoretical perspectives on disciplinary literacies
- Wide-angle and narrow-angle approaches to designing disciplinary literacies programmes
- ESP and CLIL approaches to teaching literacies in specific disciplines
- Dialogues between discipline experts, subject specialists, ESP practitioners, and literacy educators on disciplinary literacies
- Transition from secondary to tertiary disciplinary literacies teaching
- Critical literacies
- Multimodal literacies
- Other relevant topics

Abstracts of 300 words in length (excluding references), clearly outlining the scope of research, methodology, and expected results, should be submitted by 1 January 2017 to both Zuocheng Zhang (zzhang26@une.edu.au) and Eveline Chan (echan4@une.edu.au). Authors will be notified of the acceptance/rejection of their proposal by 1 February 2017. Full-text papers (max. 7,500 words in length excluding references) should be submitted by 1 June 2017 and should closely follow the Instructions to Authors specified by ESP Today (http://www.esptodayjournal.org/esp_today_instructions.html).

All contributions will be submitted to a double-blind peer review process. Authors will be notified of the acceptance/rejection of their submitted manuscripts not later than 1 September 2017 and will be asked to revise their papers in line with the review reports. The final version of the submitted papers will be published in the December 2017 special issue of ESP Today.
