'Language and Nigerian Culture' is an attempt to examine the bleak future of minority languages and cultures under the powerful and domineering languages of Hausa Igbo and Yoruba. The paper starts by looking at the role of language in the promotion of cultures and also the threats of extinction of the minority languages. It is observed that the minority languages would ultimately give way to major languages as a natural process. Three majors have been suggested to prevent losing them entirely. Another observation made is that of spontaneous replacement of many cultures in the North with the Hausa/Islamic Culture, while divergence of cultures is eminent in the South with admixture of cultures in the West. The last part of the paper suggests the various contributions each organisation/individual or body can give towards preservation of the already threatened languages and cultures and promotion of the dynamic languages of Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
