Title: A Formalistic Analysis of the Question-word Movement in Persian
Author: Abbas Ali Ahangar
Email: click here to access email
Institution: Sistan and Balouchistan University
Linguistic Subfield: Syntax
Subject Language: Farsi, Western
Abstract:

This paper studies the process of wh-word movement in Persian according to the univesal principle of Move-alpha, based ob the Government-Binding Theory (Chomsky,1981,1986). The analysis centers on the optional movement of the wh-word in simple, embedded (complex) interrogative sentences. In this analysis, the principles and syntactic conditions ruling over this syntactic process are determined. Next, the occurrence of the wh-word movement and its A-bar/non-argument nature are substantiated. Also, on the landing site of wh-phrase the onset of sentence(adjunct position) is demonstrated to be most suitable and economical syntactic position for the wh-word to attach to in simple and embedded Persian sentences.
