From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

Abstract: This paper investigates why TestDaF - the officially certified and recognized university entrance exam proofing sufficient knowledge of the German language which is comparable to TOEFL - is only insignificantly made use of by Japanese students intending to take up a study at universities in German speaking countries. On the other hand, students in Korea -- their neighbouring country across the sea -- seem to be much more enthusiastic about TestDaF although Japan outnumbers Korea significantly in terms of students and universities.
