From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

''A couple'' or ''A couple of''?

I seem to notice that many people in North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and
maybe Wisconsin, say ''a couple'' rather than ''a couple of'' when
constructing a sentence like ''There are a couple of lines left to
finish.'' This would be rendered: ''There are a couple lines left to
finish.''
