From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query:   Dear Linguist List,

We are doing a study looking at the relationship between the speech
intonation contours of song lyrics (when spoken as text) and the musical
melody to which those lyrics were set in song.

If anyone is aware of prior work (especially empirical work) on this topic,
we would be grateful for references. We are aware that there has been a
fair amount of work on this question in tone languages, but we are
particularly interested in research on intonation languages, especially
English and French.

Thanks,

Ani Patel
